About Rev. Dr. Robert P. Childs and Debbie Childs

Pastor Bob Childs was ordained in 1977 and has served in three Presbyterian and Congregational Churches (in New Jersey, Maryland, and Connecticut) before joining the founding team of the Neighborhood Church at the end of 2006. He has been married to Debbie since 1974, and has three grown children, ages 27, 24, & 22. All are actively serving the Lord in churches where they live. A registered nurse and Bob’s long-time ministry partner, Debbie plays keyboards and helps lead worship time at The Neighborhood Church.

Bob grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and lived about 100 feet from Memorial Stadium, home for the Baltimore Orioles and Colts. He has never lost a passion for sports from his early days. In high school and college (U.Penn), he was a very successful distance runner, being Maryland State track champion in high school, and Heptagonal and IC4A champion while at Penn.

During his high school years he developed friendships with a group of guys who led him to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. During his college years he began to sense a call of God to go into ministry, as a result of being deeply involved both at his home church and with campus ministries at Penn. He received a Master’s Degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1977, and in 1990 Bob received a Doctor of Ministry degree, also from Gordon-Conwell. He has lived in Stamford since 1987.

Over the past years, Bob has served on the boards of various local and regional organizations, including the Salvation Army in Stamford, Habitat for Humanity in Fairfield County, Vision New England, and, in 2005, the Billy Graham New York City Crusade Pastor’s Committee.

In addition to his love for Jesus, and for sports (he still plays basketball), Bob loves to read, especially history, and does an occasional cross-stitch. His greatest love and joy, however, is found in his relationship with Jesus Christ, and in encouraging others to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:7).
